Provincial regulators cool to proposed mining transparency regime Concerns over implementation of transparency rules A made-in-Canada solution Canada urged to ensure miners publish what they pay Industry and transparency groups are blowing hot and cold on the approach Canada’s natural resources minister has outlined that would force mining companies to disclose payments to governments.
They’re pleased the Harper government is keen to follow through on the prime minister’s commitment last June to put in place a mandatory disclosure regime, and that the government has picked up on a number of their recommendations. But they say the government’s proposal falls short in several places, and they want more conversation among all the potential players in a new system. As it stands, provincial and territorial securities regulators are cool to the idea that they provide the best place for disclosure.
